Position Summary:

The circulating nurse is responsible for managing all nursing care within the operating room, observing the surgical team from a broad perspective, and assisting the team to create and maintain a safe, comfortable environment for the patient's surgery. The circulating nurse ensures that all members of the surgical team perform in a united effort. One perioperative RN is dedicated to the patient during that patient's entire intraoperative experience. By employing critical thinking, assessment, diagnosing, outcome identification, planning, and evaluation skills, RN circulators direct the nursing care and coordinate activities of the surgical team for the benefit of the patient, whose protective reflexes or self-care abilities are compromised by the procedure.

Essential Job functions:

Room set up and preparation: Opens sterile supplies and instrumentation according to septic technique. Ensures special instrumentation or prosthetics have arrived if requested. Check for proper functioning of equipment.

Develop an individualized plan of care. Verify completeness of chart, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plan to meet the individualized needs of the patient. Incorporates principles of growth & development relative to the patient's age specific needs in the plan of care. Assess and meet the patient's individual physical and psychological needs.

Intraoperative: Positioning, prepping, Supervise and direct patient care and team members in a single operating room. Ensure proper techniques and practices are maintained. Ensure a safe environment through continued alertness to safety and hazards and maintaining aseptic techniques. Helps patient move to OR table, requesting assistance as necessary and secures safety strap. Performs appropriate counts.

Patient safety: - Universal Protocol, Time outs, pre-procedural safety huddle, fire risk assessment, humidity, Patient identification, chart review. Follows LH UP policy. Labels and reports malfunctioning supplies, instrumentation or equipment to the appropriate people. Completes SMDA paperwork as appropriate. Keeps noise to a minimum, does not use cell phone in paper care areas.

Assist Anesthesia: Remains next to patient and assists anesthesia staff during induction. Remains next to patient during extubation and emergence from anesthesia.

Medication safety.

Specimen handling.

Documentation and charging. HSM, Soarian, SCIP measures. Maintains accurate record of procedure and charges. Records lot numbers and expiration date for implants.

 

TAT, Nurse to nurse handoff, patient transfer. Ensures orderly progression of schedule by notifying SDS and facilitator if room is running late and will delay next patient. Efficient room TAT. Gives PACU report.

 

Other duties as assigned.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Associates, Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. CNOR preferred.
  • Current Registered Nurse Licensure in the State of Ohio. BLS Certification required.
  • Hospital nursing experience preferred.
