We are looking for dedicated and caring professionals to join our team!  Olathe Health is an independent, non-profit health system that operates:

 -Olathe Medical Center, a 300-bed general acute care facility which is recognized for its wide range of specialty care, cutting-edge technology and a dedicated medical staff with an excellent reputation,

 -Miami County Medical Center, a 39-bed general acute care facility which is nationally recognized for Patient Satisfaction, and provides quality care in numerous sub-specialties, and

 -Olathe Health Physicians, which includes freestanding primary and specialty clinics that focus on quality, patient-centered care. 

We are looking for a Chief Nursing Officer to join our executive team at Olathe Health.


Position Summary:


The Chief Nursing Officer guides and manages the overall provision of Nursing Services for Olathe Health System.  Responsibilities include planning, directing, organizing, staffing, and coordinating various activities and operations.  Establishes standards of nursing practice and develops policies, procedures and nursing standards of patient care.  Assesses and evaluates the quality of care provided and directs quality improvement activities.  Serves as an integral member of the executive team and works closely with others to advance our strategic plan, (for example, governing bodies, medical staff, organizational leaders, community leaders, and the associate population). Demonstrates leadership by example, and is key to developing leaders in the organization.  Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of the organization's strategic plan.  

The Chief Nursing Officer is a proponent of change management, and is able to build consensus within teams to motivate associates toward positive outcomes. Develops leaders and nursing strategic plans for both short and long range planning. Promotes collaborative problem solving and drives communication to all levels in the hierarchy.  Possesses financial acumen to develop budgets that meet patient care needs while respecting the organization’s current and future resources.  Holds self and leaders accountable to meet financial, staffing and project milestones.


Knowledge, Skills:

Basic Duties:

Leads, organizes and manages the overall provision of Nursing Services for Olathe Health System.   

Oversees the planning and organization of department functions, develops and implements annual goals and objectives; establishes standards of nursing practice; develops policies, procedures and nursing standards of patient care, etc.  

Is able to demonstrate nursing skills and clinical knowledge on a day to day basis.


Provides visionary leadership to formulate and implement the nursing strategic plan in alignment with Olathe Health’s mission and core values, and the organizational strategic plan.

Serves as a member of the executive leadership team; builds and maintains relationships and collaborates with other leaders, governing bodies, medical staff and associates to ensure the delivery of quality health care throughout the system.

Builds and maintains relationships with community organizations and stakeholders in the community to advance Olathe Health’s mission and strategic goals.

Demonstrates leadership by example, and provides mentorship and guidance to nursing leaders throughout Olathe Health, to help them achieve joy of work while furthering Olathe Health’s mission and goals.

Regularly engages in social and intentional rounding with patients, families, and associates to build relationships, ensure consistency in communication, enrich the patient’s experience, and remove barriers to ensure that associates can provide the best level of care.


Works collaboratively with nursing leaders and others to develop and implement nursing and other pertinent strategic goals.  Demonstrates and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration with others within Olathe Health to successfully implement programs and procedures to serve patient care needs, and advance Olathe Health’s mission.

System Integration:

Responsible to ensure that outpatient services are integrated with the appropriate hospital inpatient services in accordance with the needs of the patient through proper procedures and implementation of these services.

Develops strategies aligned to support system integration of patient care services in areas of care including acute care, surgical services, ambulatory care, cancer services, cardiovascular services, home health and hospice.

Strategic Thinking and Planning:

  • Develops leaders and strategic plans for short and long range planning.  
  • Establishes nursing strategic plans. Facilitates the implementation of the plans, fostering ownership and accountability for plan implementation from leaders through the organizational hierarchy.

Talent Management/Development:

  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with associates throughout Olathe Health; is seen as a positive force of motivation for associates to attain success in their roles. 
  • Promotes and facilitates development and improvement opportunities to associates at all levels.

Change Management:

Understands change theory and impacts on patient care and service delivery.  Promotes change management in a positive manner, encourages staff input as appropriate, and is able to adapt nursing plans and programs to evolving health care trends and community needs.

Communication/Emotional Intelligence:

  • Demonstrates and promotes active listening and a collaborative approach to problem solving, but is not afraid to definitively make a decision as necessary.  Is able to effectively communicate why.
  • Demonstrates the ability to build consensus with diverse teams to facilitate positive outcomes.  
  • Promotes and demonstrates effective top down communication, and models appropriate transparency; also encourages lateral and bottom up communication.

Financial Acumen/Knowledge:

  • Develops annual operating and capital budgets and submits for appropriate approvals in accordance with established time lines.  
  • Communicates with Nursing Leaders regarding the financial health of the system, educates to ensure proper allocation of resources in the short and long term, and promotes stewardship of Olathe Health's resources.
  • Educates and communicates with leaders on budget setting and management, and holds leaders accountable to acceptable productivity and resource allocation.

Accountability (Self and others):

  • Demonstrates a consistent level of performance.  Assumes responsibility willingly.  Completes follow-up and finishes tasks on time. Demonstrates the ability to make decisions based on gathered fact.
  • Sets milestones and holds self and other accountable to achieve.


Participates in evaluating, selecting, acquiring, and integrating health care technology and information management systems that meet patient care needs and promote the efficient utilization of nursing resources.

Safety Culture/Zero Harm:

  • Ensures a safe environment of care for patients, visitors, and associates, in compliance with regulations and established standards.
  • Leads and role models patient safety focused culture.

Quality and Compliance:

  • Ensures that the Nursing quality assessment and improvement program is planned, developed, and evaluated.  Supports activities to improve the quality of health care services at Olathe Medical Center and Miami County Medical Center.  
  • Ensures compliance with applicable regulatory and accrediting bodies.

Collegial Relationship Management:

  • Promotes the collaboration of the Nursing Department and affiliated nursing education programs for the provision of nursing care and educational activities.


Position Requirements:


  • Minimum: Graduate Degree - Master's Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or Hospital Administration
  • Preferred: Doctoral Degree in Nursing or Healthcare Administration



Minimum: 10 years of progressive management experience, the most recent 3 - 5 years experience in a Chief Nurse Executive role.


License, Registration and/or Certification:

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in accordance with the Kansas Nurse Licensure Compact required upon hire
  • National certification from a professional nursing organization in a relevant field of clinical expertise required upon hire
  • Member of American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) or American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) preferred
